Common households can be full of chemicals toxic to you and to the environment. These chemicals are often found in places you might least expect.
Consider the following ways to detox your home and improve your life by reducing your exposure to harmful chemicals.
- Read labels for skincare and personal products
You may be surprised to learn how many chemicals are in products you use every day to get ready in the morning. Read labels on your personal products and switch to products containing natural ingredients such as shea butter, beeswax, and almond oil. Check Pinterest for ideas on DIY skincare and personal care products you can make at home.
- Reduce household dust
Dust equals allergens and toxins. Reduce dust by dusting surface areas and mopping your floors at least once a week. Use a HEPA filter vacuum for your carpets to remove allergens.
- Increase ventilation
Open windows and doors to increase air flow. Keep plants and fresh flowers in your home to detox the air for a natural, pleasant aroma. Invest in air purifiers to keep your bedroom air fresh while you sleep.
- Take your shoes off at the door
Leave the dirt outside your home by making a house rule to remove shoes at the door. Create a space for shoes near the door as a reminder to take off shoes when entering.
- Use green cleaning products
Avoid harsh cleaning chemicals and opt for green, natural cleaning products. They’re safer for you and better for the environment.
- Be picky with plastics
Plastics often contain BPA which is linked to cancer and developmental problems. Avoid wrapping food in plastic and avoid plastic food containers or bottles which aren’t BPA-free. Use glass and cardboard packaging for food storage and switch to steel water bottles.
- Remove dry cleaned clothes from plastic
The less plastic you have in your life, the better. Remove and throw away the outer plastic covering as soon as you get your clothes from the dry cleaners.
- Get rid of Teflon pans
The lining in nonstick pans can damage your liver, wreak havoc on your immune system, and cause damage to other organs. Use cast iron, stainless steel, or porcelain-coated pans for safer cooking.
- Avoid synthetic deodorizers
Air fresheners contain artificial scents and chemicals which impair memory and increase your risk of cancer. Avoid using synthetic room deodorizers with fresh plants, HEPA filters, and open your windows for fresh air.

Great tips here. I prefer using “greener” cleaning products in my home – I think they smell a lot better than harsher chemicals. Thanks for sharing!

Taking your shoes off at the door is an awesome habit we should adopt from Russians and some other nations.
