With a new school year comes new opportunities…to make better grades! There’s countless ways to do that: pay better attention in class, take notes, study the list could go on and I’m sure, by now, many students already have that advice memorized. However, there’s a simple fix that many people don’t realize may be hindering their focus: a messy study space.
Princeton University Neuroscience Institute conducted a study that proves exactly that.
“Multiple stimuli present in the visual field at the same time compete for neural representation by mutually suppressing their evoked activity throughout visual cortex, providing a neural correlate for the limited processing capacity of the visual system.”
What that’s basically saying is that your brain splits up its attention because there are so many things competing for focus. This obviously can make it incredibly difficult to concentrate on one specific task. When the study space is decluttered, organized and clean there’s not a lot of room for your mind to stray and therefore you’re able to fixate your attention better.
So, if the kitchen table transforms into a desk after school, try picking up around the kitchen and see if your little scholar’s focus improves. If the bedroom is where their spending most of their hours cramming for tests help them clean up their space. Purchase folders for organization and designate certain areas for knick-knacks.
The area in which you choose to spend your time has quite the effect on the way you are able to process information. If picking up a little here and there can help secure that ‘A’ you may as well give it a try, plus mom and dad won’t be upset when you have a clean room and a report card worthy of hanging on the refrigerator.
