Let’s be honest…cleaning the toilet isn’t the most exciting chore. But with the right tools (and without harsh chemicals), it can be simple, satisfying, and completely eco-friendly. At Maid to Shine, we believe in cleaning that’s safe for your home and your health. Today we go over a few tips to give it that classic shine!
🧼 What You’ll Need (Eco-Friendly Essentials):
-
Rubber gloves (reusable)
-
Baking soda
-
White distilled vinegar
-
Glass spray bottle with a mix of water + vinegar + essential oils (tea tree, lavender, lemon)
-
Castile soap (like Dr. Bronner’s)
-
Microfiber cloths (washable and reusable)
-
Toilet brush
-
Old toothbrush for detailing
-
Pumice stone (optional, for stubborn stains)
🚽 Step 1: Prep the Space
Remove items around the toilet so you have a clear workspace. Open a window or turn on a fan for ventilation especially when using vinegar.
💧 Step 2: Naturally Deodorize & Disinfect the Bowl
Sprinkle baking soda generously inside the bowl, especially under the rim. Then pour white vinegar over it slowly. It will fizz and bubble this reaction helps lift stains and deodorize.
Let it sit for 10 minutes to work its magic.
🧽 Step 3: Scrub with a Purpose
Use a toilet brush to scrub all around the bowl. Pay extra attention to under the rim and down into the siphon jets.
For hard water stains or calcium buildup, gently scrub with a pumice stone just be sure the surface stays wet to avoid scratching.
✨ Step 4: Clean the Exterior with a Natural Spray
In a glass spray bottle, mix:
-
1 part white vinegar
-
1 part water
-
10–15 drops of tea tree, lavender, or lemon essential oil (for natural antibacterial power and a fresh scent)
Spray the tank, handle, lid, seat (top and bottom), and the base. Use a microfiber cloth to wipe everything down. Use a second cloth or clean section for the seat and handle to avoid cross-contamination.
🪣 Step 5: Tackle the Nooks & Crannies
Use your vinegar spray and an old toothbrush to scrub around the hinges and base of the seat. If possible, remove the seat to get into hard-to-reach crevices where grime tends to hide.
🌬 Step 6: Dry and Finish
Let everything air dry or give it a quick polish with a dry microfiber cloth. Flush once (with the lid down!) to rinse the bowl, and enjoy your sparkling clean, chemical-free throne. 👑
