Remember when youâd go to a friendâs house when you were younger and their mom would make you pop off your shoes at the door? Well, that lady that you perceived as a germaphobe really had the right idea! Whatâs the deal with taking off your shoes when you enter a home? Letâs find out!
Itâs pretty obvious that the number one reason to drop the shoes at the door isâŠgerms! Think about what your sneakers go through in a day. Walking on sidewalks, visiting bathrooms and plenty of other places that are exposed to the public. Researchers at the University of Houston found that about 40% of shoes were carrying âC.diffâ bacterium, which stands for Clostridium difficile. C.diff is nothing to mess with! This nasty bacteria can lead to intestinal problems or even sepsis. It was reported that C. diff, from the souls of your shoes, can spread around to other household areas such as toilets, tops and surfaces, and wherever floor dust was found. These spores can live on dry surfaces for a long time. So maybe itâs just better to leave this little terror as close to the door as you can.
Now that weâve talked about the scary stuff we can move on to some of the less frightening reasons to shed the shoes.
Like your floors nice and shiny? So do we! Thatâs why weâre not letting our thick souls anywhere near our perfect hard wood. Itâs possible to see some serious damage from your shoes as you stomp along. Avoid scuffing, scratches, staining and general wear and tear just by going barefoot.
All in all its up to you how you want to maintain your home. Wether youâre a shoe wearing family or not, thereâs no shame! Here at Maid to Shine, weâve just found it easier to maintain the cleanliness of your place if youâre not tracking in things from outside. What do you think? Shoes on or off, let us know in the comments!

Definitely shoes off as it would be easier to keep the place clean. Plus with shoes in, like mentioned in your article, we dont know what bacteria has the shoes carried in!

Great blog! It’s interesting how different households have different conventions. It’s also interesting how it differs in schools in different countries. In the UK school kids keep their shoes on, but it is not the same in every country. Some schools prefer to teach children to take their shoes off when entering schools
I’ve found that by taking off our shoes at the door, those high traffic areas in our house don’t build up that dirt and grime so fast, especially on carpet. It also keeps us from bringing in pebbles or leaves onto the hardwood floors. Aside from the damage to the floors, you have to sweep much more often if people keep their shoes on when coming into the house.
That’s a great point, most house hold do not give enough attention to it, we walk all around the places and our shoes catches various bacteria, I personally prefer to take off my shoes by the door.
That is an extraordinary decision, I love more sweltering shoes, and as a rule hope to purchase shoes at a bargain
My wife and I have been married for many years now. Over the years, we’ve had to decide what would be best when it comes to our children’s behavior. We’ve decided that having them wear their shoes at the door is a good practice and everyone has agreed with this decision so far.
